Our Journey

Recently, due to the interactions among various social groups, the strength of traditional norms and ways of life of the tribes has been weakened. Changes are noticed in their life and socio-cultural practices both in rural and urban areas which are affecting the core of their culture. To overcome such challenges, a group of social engineers and think tanks decided to form a trust namely, Donyi Polo Cultural and Charitable Trust (DPCCT).

Under the leadership of Er. Katung Wahge, under the aegis of Indigenous Faith and Cultural Society Of Arunachal Pradesh (IFCSAP). Donyi Polo Cultural and Charitable Trust (DPCCT) is mandated by five major tribes of the state namely., Adi, Apatani, Galo, Nyishi, and Tagin; the progenies of the same great ancestor-“Abo Tani”, who are worshippers of Donyi Polo.

With the Inspiration

With the inspiration to preserve and promote the indigenous faith and culture, the DPCCT team interacted with various missions and institutions which are committed to a similar cause. In the same line, the team including Er. Pai Dawe, Shri Tajum Tasung, Shri Rupesh Mathur, Er Kare, and  Shri Subrato Sen, under the leadership of Er. Katung Wahge visited Ramayana Dharsan at Kanyakumari on 25th Dec. 2018.

The team stayed there for few days and observed the commitment, dedication, and passion of people towards the culture. Through witnessing the process of preservation and promotion of culture, the team realized that the initiatives for practice, preservation, and promotion of the indigenous faith and culture could be mechanized and institutionalized through planning and due diligence in the state of Arunachal Pradesh.

The Wish and Dream

The wish and dream then turned to an Aim, i.e. the aim to establish Donyi Polo Khumko. From that very moment, the team visualized the Donyi Polo Khumko in every nook and corner of our society, to provide a platform to the people of Arunachal Pradesh to practice, preserve and promote their culture, faith, and identity. While implementing the idea of the Khumko in the field, it was observed that there is a need for experts/human resources to run and look after the Khumkos.

Gurukul

Finally, it was decided to establish Gurukul (Nyubu Nyvgam Yerko) in all the Abo Tani inhabitants’ areas, as the challenge of practice and preservation of indigenous culture, was prevalent among all the tribes.

As this was the first of this kind of initiative, so it was very difficult for getting funds, land, and other resources. To overcome the situation Er. Katung Wahge and Er Pai Dawe donated land for the Nyubu Nyvgam Yerko, in addition, Er Katung Wahge being the chairman of Donyi Polo Cultural and Charitable Trust supported financially as well, to meet all the expenses incurred in the construction of the institution, schooling, and accommodation of the students, payments for other expenses of the Nyubu Nyvgam Yerko, etc.

After completion of the first year and after witnessing the success of the Nyubvu Nyvgam Yerko people from every tribe of the state came in support of Nyubu Nyvgam Yerko. The foundation stone for Gurukul (Nyubu Nyvgam Yerko ) was laid in presence of Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Pema Khandu and other dignitaries.

The concept of (Nyubu Nyvgam Yerko) is taken from the ancient Gurukul system. Here the students are provided with indigenous education along with modern (CBSE pattern) education. This pattern of education ensures the holistic development of the students. Gurukul is serving as the platform to imbibe the eternal values, spread lessons of self-discipline, peace, harmony, and brotherhood among the youth and community members of Arunachal Pradesh.

The tribal language, rituals, traditional practices, festivals, indigenous music, dance, games, construction of various forms of shelters, cultivation of various medicinal herbs, chanting of hymns and folklores, making of indigenous crafts items, etc. are part of the course curriculum of the Nyubu Nyvgam Yerko.

Nyubu Nyvgam Yerko is made to provide education from class 1st to 10th with a batch size of 30 students. As result, from the tenth year onwards, Arunachal Pradesh will get 30 students per year, who will be well versed in their language, culture, practices, and traditions. These students will further spread the knowledge among the society members. Nyubu Nyvgam Yerko will further be engaged in the research and documentation of Indigenous cultural practices. These institutions of Nyubu Nyvgam Yerko at different locations will help future generations in giving a better understanding of our culture our roots.

This institution of Nyubu Nyvgam Yerko is the result of all the hard works done by the great souls; past and present. The number of people involved and committed to this noble cause cannot be even imagined. Numerous people have worked tirelessly visualizing the realization of their dream of preserving and promoting the indigenous faith and culture through the Institutions of Nyubu Nyvgam Yerko and Khumko. This is a dream come true initiative for the people of Arunachal Pradesh. This institution of Nyubu Nyvgam Yerko is the medium through which the dream of every indigenous person, indigenous follower, and indigenous well-wisher, will become reality.

The conceptualization of Nyubu Nyvgam Yerko could not have been possible without the guidance, support, and wishes of Shri Balakrishna Ji President Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalaya (VKV).

We the tribal people believe in finding commonalities among the communities and celebrate those similarities. Therefore, we are confident that this is just the beginning. There will be many more Nyubu Nvygam Yerko to accommodate and instill the passion and dedication for the indigenous faith and culture amongst the younger generations of the different tribes of the state.
